Today we were shopping for winter boots and a belt for Sam. Olivia was pretty miffed because she wanted some new clothes too. I told her that Christmas was coming soon, and maybe Santa will bring her some new clothes. This is the rest of the conversation:
Olivia: But Santa can't make the clothes that they sell in stores
Me: Yes, but he often sends his elves to buy the clothes that little girls want
Olivia (who really just is trying to find a logical argument to justify getting new clothes NOW): Well, Santa's not real anyway.
Me: Oh, really, he's not. Then how come when you hang up an empty stocking on Christmas Eve, it's filled up with presents on Christmas morning.
Olivia: Because some people come and fill it with candies and toys
Me: Who fills it - Santa's helpers?
Olivia: No, not Santa or his helpers. Just some people. They come into your house and fill up your stockings.

Oh goodness, she's a smarty. I think deep down all kids know what's up.
